Allison Cara Tolman has been acting for more than 20 years. In Dallas when she graduated from college, she became one of the founders of Second Thought Theatre. She relocated to Chicago in 2009, where she attended The Second City Training Center to study acting. Tolman started her acting career in 2014. She starred on the FX crime comedy Fargo's first season. Fargo was based on Coen Brothers' film of the same name. It featured Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman alongside Bob Odenkirk. Tolman received praise for her portrayal of Minnesota Police Officer Molly Solverson. Vanity Fair said that Tolman "calmly and assuredly stole" the show. Tolman was awarded the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Film/Miniseries and was also nominated for Best Actress at both the Emmy Awards & Golden Globes for her role. In the same year it was announced that Tolman will make an role on the Mindy Project on the show as Abby Berman who is a romance writer. In 2015, she played an supporting role of Michael Dougherty s comedy horror film Krampus. Her breakout performance as Fargo was the reason she decided to leave several supporting parts, including those of mothers, best friends and wives. Tolman was searching for new roles that were more unusual. In 2017, Tolman starred in ABC's Downward Dog, based on the Animal Media Group web series which was cancelled after a single season. Tolman was a part of ABC's Emergence drama which premiered on 24 September 2019 but was cancelled by ABC within a year, at the 21st of May in 2020 despite Tolman posting on Twitter she thought the ratings were "pretty acceptable". The actress was a guest on NBC's Good Girls. She played Alma Filcott during the second season of Why Women Kill.
